I’m writing this to say after being a flower fai

I’m writing this to say after being a flower fairy for a long time ( I hate the word florist!), the industry is flooded with florists as flower schools pump them out in their hoards.
There are just two ways I love flowers - flowers in the garden or flowers arranged and chosen as a painting in my head as I go. Wild forms, subtle tones, pairings of beauty…scented, that reflect the month. An echo of the season.

The flowers I would choose last would be those thin, sad ones suffocating in cellophane, in a supermarket stack. Bright, gawdy, mass produced ones. Glorified, as people are swept into the hype of trends and mass produced tacky glittery things. Why would a flower need patterned cellophane, a bright ribbon or a glittery bauble on a stick to look beautiful?! They forget the flower and the real meaning. Everything becomes so far from what it should be.

If you buy flowers buy mine - dreamt by me, who knows a flower from the seed it grew, through and through. Perennial or annual, native and natural. 10 years of understanding their season, and when they shine. Sage greens, burgundy, plums, dusky pinks, and mucky mocha tones. Flowers that mean something to you, and mean something to me.

There’s so much good intention.

I’ve always loved Halloween and bonfire night together.
Looking up at the pitch black sky, watching fire and soaking up the glaring heat. Something that feels simple, old…a tradition, a ritual with nature.

Simple rituals entwined with nature and our spinning world that bring us back, touch our soul and help us brace the wonder of Mother Natures wisdom.

The ancient festival of Samhain marks the end of harvest and summer, and the entrance into a dark, cold winter. The Celts believed that the veil between the world of the living and the spirit world thinned on this day, and that the souls of the dead returned to visit their homes.
I love a simple mark of the season. Bringing bracken and rose hips inside in a bud vase, lighting a candle and feeling alive. Give me that any day over a trip to the heaving supermarket to buy some orange plastic decorations, with no meaning and zero sense. 😱

Hello 👋🏻 I thought I’d reintroduce myself for followers new and old. I’m Anna, I love walking in the sunshine & sitting by the sea. My favourite haunts are the Pembrokeshire coastline, Dorset countryside & the isle of Anglesey. But on a normal day - a black coffee and a cake will see me through.

When I’m designing with flowers it’s the paintings I create in my head as I go. Each thought of flower and leaf woven in adds a layer of colour and texture to my designs. And I stop adding when I feel it evokes what I intended it to. A sense of autumn, or an echo of a hedgerow.
Layers of colour in different tones & harmonious hues. Vintage, in between, mucky, antique-y colours. Combinations of colours together. Textural flowers, for a soft or wild look. Flowers and foliages that fill in between the bigger blooms, with a deceptively crucial part to play.

I love to watch the seasons and everything they bring, from empty hedgerows with black berried Ivy & bracken. Tiny snowdrops peeping through. And blackthorn buds emerging into the spring. Noticing nature every day.

My Grandma was a huge inspiration to me & this is where it all started for me. Many hours were spent pressing wild flowers, learning their Latin names and listening to her recite the flower fairy poems by Mary Cicely Barker. I loved to admire her flower fairy books and choose my favourite character. I still keep her wild flower pressings.

I love to keep my little corner of insta looking beautiful, I hope you enjoy it and hopefully get your hands on some of the blooms that I love sometime soon.

Here’s how to create my Autumn Door Wreath, just the way I would, for free.
Forage the hedgerows, field or garden - if you’re unsure of which flowers and foliage to use, don’t worry, pick what you think is best, trust the process and focus on a slow Sunday for yourself. To create the same effect - I have used Ivy, Viburnum, Heather, Hydrangea, Rose Hips, Pyracantha, Oak Leaves and Snowberry. My wreath base is made with Silver Birch twigs collected beneath a tree - these are especially soft and bendy but any pliable twigs would be fine to act as your base. You can soak your wreath and the moss will help retain moisture- although with the damp weather, and using long lasting ingredients like these, your wreath will dry out nicely anyway, if you are struggling to find moss. Why my flowers? I spent some time wondering about this, what is it with flowers and why do I use them.
It’s the paintings I create with them in my head as I go. Each thought of flower and leaf woven in adds a layer- of colour and texture. And I stop adding when I feel it evokes what I intended it to. A sense of autumn, or an echo of a hedgerow.

People say why bother when they die.
But their beauty rules, and fading nature teaches us to let go and live with the cycle of the season. Watching something grow, unfurl, show itself and fade.

Four elements to my love with flowers.

Layered colours & tones.
Layers of the same colour in different tones & harmonious hues. Vintage, in between mucky, antique-y colours. Combinations of colours together.

Texture.
Textural flowers, for a soft or wild look. Flowers that fill in between the bigger blooms, with a deceptively crucial part to play.

Hint of British.
Flowers that feel they belong, reflecting our season here in the UK. Nothing that feels out of place, but homely.

The interesting and unusual.
Someone once said- I love your flowers because there’s always something a little unexpected in there. This is true to me - seed pods, or a strange flower you didn’t know of. Something botanically interesting.
